Understanding VA Benefits with Veteran Burials November 21, 2024

veteran funeral

There can be a long list of “to-do’s” when planning a funeral for a family member. If the deceased served in the military, that list should include investigating and applying for veteran’s death and burial benefits.

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a number of benefits for those who have served their country. Here is a look at these benefits and who may potentially qualify:

VA Burial Allowance

The VA offers a flat rate payment to help cover the costs of a burial, cremation, and associated expenses. The amount of this burial allowance depends on the date of death. It could potentially be as much as $2,000 for service-related deaths that occurred after September 11, 2001. Other factors impacting burial benefits include whether a veteran was a resident of a VA facility, whether they died while in service, and the date of death. Veterans not interested in burial in a national cemetery may qualify for an additional $796 payment.

To file a claim, families submit VA Form 21-530, the death certificate, and the veteran’s DD-214 to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Proof of costs or receipts need not be submitted.

Burial in a National Cemetery

Qualifying veterans and certain family members may be eligible for a plot or burial space at one of the nation’s over 170 national cemeteries. Spouses, minor children, and unmarried adult children of veterans may qualify. Burial spaces are available for both traditional burials and for the internment of cremains.

Other Benefits Available

Other benefits and honors veterans may be eligible for include:

  • Military honors for funerals from the Department of Defense
  • Presentation of an American Flag
  • Veteran gravesite marker
