At Fares J. Radel, we understand what a difficult time it is for family and friends when a loved one passes. Even when a family member’s death was anticipated it still makes for a challenging time. Deaths that occur suddenly from an accident or suicide can be even more difficult to work through emotionally. Every situation is difficult, but you should never be alone when coping with grief.
Here are some grieving tips from a variety of respected sources.
- Grieving is a natural process you should try not to avoid. You can try to control emotions, but recognize that grief is part of the healing process.
- Discuss your loss with someone close to you or a member of the clergy or a counselor.
- Take care of yourself. Many will unconsciously not eat right or not get enough rest during the grieving process.
- Don’t be in a hurry to get through the grieving process. Don’t expect it to be over after the services. Think about the positive aspects of your relationship with the loved one and be grateful for the time you had with them.
- If you feel there is something left unsaid, write a letter. No one may ever read it, but sometimes expressing your grief in writing can help bring some closure.
- If a death is sudden and unexpected, you may be prescribed medication to help you deal with it. Be careful not to rely on drugs or medication to continue to mask the pain. It may only delay it.
- Take the time you need to grieve properly. Don’t be in a hurry to go back to work. Allow enough time to absorb what you are experiencing.
- Understand that grieving is not an event, it is a process and it takes work. Too many of us simply try to suppress it.
- For some, the grieving process never ends. But take solace in knowing that it will get easier.
