As funerals become more customized and personalized and celebrations of life become more popular, music is playing an increasingly important role in final services. While music played during services were once mostly religious and solemn in nature, songs chosen to honor the memory of loved ones has expanded to include a wide range of genres. This is a time when little is considered “standard” when it comes to music at funerals but there are steps you can take to make sure music is meaningful and appropriate.
-
Consider the person who is being memorialized. A good place to start is with thinking about the deceased and his or her favorite song or songs. If a specific song doesn’t come to mind, perhaps you can remember a favorite artist or type or style of music. It may not take long to discover these songs if the person had a collection of music they listened to.
-
Think about the mood you are trying to create. Songs played during a funeral service don’t always have to be sorrowful. They can be thoughtful, inspiring and even upbeat. You certainly don’t want to offend anyone with offensive lyrics or an inappropriate party-style beat. Keep in mind songs can be instrumental or have meaningful lyrics.
-
Choose songs that may have meaning to the family. Ask family members about songs they may remember from a wedding, vacation or other special occasions. Many times, certain songs will bring back fond memories of a loved one.
-
Listen to alternative versions of songs. There may be some songs that may be more appropriate in a different version than the original. An acoustic guitar version of a rock song, a solo of a song originally performed by a group or an instrumental treatment of a song may still reflect the personality of the deceased but better help create the atmosphere you desire.
For those pre-planning their own funeral, selecting a song or two you would like people to remember you for can be a thoughtful addition to your final plans. It can also be helpful to include a note on why the song has particular meaning for you.
