Ernest L. Dawe Jr. July 22, 1928 - February 8, 2018

Ernest L Dawe Jr. was born in Seattle, Washington on July 22, 1928. He attended grade school in Seattle, Washington and High School in Bellingham, Washington. He was the son of Ernest L Dawe Sr from British Columbia, Canada and Gladys G. Cole of Seattle, Washington. In High School he was the Advertising manager of the school newspaper, lead in the senior play, Letterman’s club in track, President of Bellingham High School’s downtown Social Club, and had numerous parts in school plays and Operetta’s. He was even voted Bellingham High School Heart throb. He was a Draftsman and Apprentice Machinist at Northwest Manufacturing Company for his summer and after school work experiences.

In 1946 after graduation, he enrolled in Western Washington College of Education for Pre-Engineering studies prior to entering the University of Washington at Seattle in 1947. He pursued studies of Industrial Engineering and management. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, the Varsity Boat Club, and University of Washington Rowing team from 1947 through 1951. He received a BA degree in General Business in 1951.

In the fall of 1951 he was selected for Pilot Training by the Air Force and went on Active duty, winning his wings and graduating in December of 1952 from Malden AFB in Malden, Missouri. His first assignment was at Connally Air Force Base in Waco, TX where he piloted training aircraft for radar observers. After three months, he was selected for heavy bombardment training and sent to Randolf Air Force Base, TX for Combat Crew Training. Upon completion of this training he was assigned directly to the Strategic Air Command (S.A.C.) and sent to Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, GA. While flying with the 308th Bomb Squadron, he was wing Stand-board Co-pilot, Assistant Operations Officer and Squadron Intelligence officer. In 1952 on loan from his Squadron, he was appointed S.A.C. Project Officer for the U.S.A.F. Work Measurement System and Base Manpower officer which were positions he held until he requested release from Active Duty in December of 1955.

On April 16, 1955, Ernest married Julia Patricia Moore daughter of William Nicholas Moore and Julia Myrtle Carrigan Moore. They married at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Savannah, GA with an elegant reception following at The General Oglethorpe Hotel on Wilmington Island.

In January of 1956, Ernest worked as a Partner with his father in “Dawe and Son” of Arcata, CA as General Manager. This company manufactured all types of lumber mill machinery for sale throughout the Pacific Northwest and Northern CA. A Patent was created on a roller chain sprocket called DAW-SPROK on July 27, 1959. Due to the demand in sales, this product was licensed for National Sales and distribution by others after 1960. While in the Pacific Northwest, he was also Commander of his American Legion post. In 1962 Ernest relocated to Savannah, GA. He worked as the President for Diamond Manufacturing Company which supplied heavy marine equipment by designing and building numerous units of specialized equipment such as tugboats, barges, dredges, cranes and special weldments. He retired in 1990 in Savannah, GA then moved to Cincinnati, OH in the fall of 2014 to be near family.

Ernie and his wife Patsy raised their three Children in Savannah, GA. His parents, as well as his loving son, Ernest L Dawe III and wife Patsy Dawe, predeceased Ernie. He is survived by his son, Bill Dawe (Charlene), Cross SC, granddaughter, Sandy Dawe and great grandsons, Devin Dawe and Nate Roeder and son, Chris Dawe (Lynnette), Cincinnati, OH and grandchildren Nick Dawe and Kristen Dawe Powell (Alex). He was kind and lovable to all. He will be missed by all his family and the friends he has made in Cincinnati, Immaculate Heart of Mary, and at The New England Club where he has lived these last four years. Our prayer- Lord God, we praise you and thank you for giving us this man to be a part of our lives to love and be loved. Although we suffer grief and sorrow we are comforted with assurance that at this very moment Ernie is in Heaven. Amen. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society, and/or Immaculate Heart of Mary would be appreciated. Ernie was a 19 year survivor of Pancreatic/ Bile Duct Cancer.

A Funeral Mass will be held at The New England Club Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at 3:30PM.
